Oh, What a Day at Orphanage Emmanuel
Today was quite the day! I woke up extra early for big circle, and got all ready. But, since it poured most of all last night, it was too wet to have big circle in the field, so the houses had individual circles. Both Fridays I have been here, big circles has been rained out. I helped Dunia, Marisol, and Veronica amke breakfast for a team that came in last night. Bacon, sausage, biscuits, and eggs. It looked great. Me and another volunteer had toddler duty this morning. The six toddlers who are not old enough to be in preschool yet, have to sit at their dorm, if we do not take them to do something. We played with legos and play dough. They love play dough. No one knows the word for penguin in Spanish, so we have taught the toddlers to call it el penguino. It is very funny to hear them say it, and they will only cal it that, nothing else. We played in the special needs yard a little this morning. They are having soccer games right now, and are pretty much obsessed with it. Once again, I was asked to play, but I just had to turn them down. They really must find it funny to watch me play. Stephanie got in trouble for calling everyone pigs, and Pamela got in trouble for not staying in their yards. They do not get to ride horses tomorrow, which they love. They have decided this week that they are not going to listen to anyone. We ate lunch at the the orphanage restaurant. It is so good! The tortillas are the best. Jenny is back for the summer from Costa Rica. She makes the absolute best tortillas. She is going to come to the volunteer house and teach us how to make them sometime this week. Rudi also promised me that he is not going to have nay more torsollos. Hopefully, he will stick to his promise. So far, so good! He is doing alot better. I had to work the Internet Cafe this afternoon. I usually only have one girl from the orphanage who is working on her studies, but today, I had three women from town. It was quite interesting. But I managed to help them make an email address in Spanish. I feel like my Spanish is improving everyday, and I can understand most conversations and lessons in Spanish. It is much easier to communicate with the kids and get them to obey and listen. After working the Internet Cafe, I helped at the clinic. There are about half of the kids who have not had their physicals this year. The team that is here now, has some doctors and nurses who are doing the physicals. It is very time consuming, but it has to be done. It is hard to keep the children quiet and entertained while waiting for their turn. On the way back to my house, it got extremely windy. Trees were almost bent in half because of the wind. We heard a loud crash, and the roof of David and Tammy Hyatts house came off. It was not a tornado, but something of the sort. This whole evening has been spent removing everything from their house and putting it into storage. They will have to work on the roof tomorrow, but until then they have to be moved to another house. It was very scary, and everyone from the orphanage was helping. No one was hurt, just some bruises and scratches. I was on kid patrol, and was watching everyones' kids. It is finished for the night now though, and the roof will start being rebuilt tomorrow. It was an interesting day here, but their is never a dull moment. I love you all!

Hey Hopey-from San Francisco. Sorry I missed chatting with you tonight. Time change caught me and Mom said you had gone to bed. Will try to do better tomorrow. I just read your blog-wow, weather sounds scary. Glad everybody is o.k. Hope they did not lose too mcuh stuff. You need to play soccer tomorrow!
Glad to hear that you Spanish is getting better. You will have to help me when I come.
Love you, Dad
My what a busy day you had. To bad about big circle - the rain won't last forever though. Hope, Dunia and Marisol back together at last - just like old times - only one thing missing ME! Where was Michell. Is Dunia running her restaurant and cooking for the team also?
Those darling little toddlers - warped for life - "el penguino" please. Do you make homemade playdough for them or is it the premade kind. We could make some big batches when I get there if you like.
I hope my previous comments about soccer did not humiliate you they were not intended to do so.... (well maybe a little) - live it up girl - I think you should play soccer tomorrow.
Do Pamela and Stephanie have to watch everyone else ride tomorrow - or did they just lose the priviledge of riding?
Thanks for keeping me posted - I miss you.
Hope, that weather is scary. I guess this must be rainy season there? It may just be that I miss rain so much is seems that you talk about it a lot. It sounds like you are having a wonderful time there. I need to go look at your photos, I haven't been to your facebook page in a while. Maybe there are other updates there I can catch up on as well :)!
Ok Hope - you and Mrs. Kellie must have secrets that you are keeping from me. Taking in this secret facebook language - Maybe one of you could fill me in ;o) Please don't leave me out -you both know I love the secret stuff.
I wanted to tell you that I think you should put some details on the nasty - raw- bloody meat in the sun with flys on it picture - There are people out there that have never been to Orphanage Emmanuel and you wouldn't want them to think that is how it is there. - ie Bonnie--- Now if you want to put a picture of chicken "slaughtering" that may be another story - don't you love how I threw in that word that you hate so much - you know the one - "slaughter".
How was soccer today. Did you play. Don't be so easily intimidated. If you can't bring yourself to another soccer match - then how bout you gather up some people for a fishing competition. I have never asked if the Hondurans are good fishermen.
Here's hoping for some "diet coke" for you today - 23 days isn't really that much longer - I don't think settling for diet pepsi will cut it though - you really need the "REAL" thing- but 23 days could really seem long if you are without "diet coke" - I could certainly try to bring you some when I come - but you know I am under strict weight regulations - and you know how important my personal FAN is to me---let me know - because for you - I would consider skipping the fan - but only for you. :oD
Love you and hope you are having a FABULOUS day. Think about all of us in Auburn every once in a while - cause - we are thinking of you lots of once in a whiles!!!
P.S. Tell A Beck I said hi and we need to chat again real soon! love you both!!!
Hi, Hope.
Como estas?
For you and the toddlers: "el pingüino." Your work there sounds great. I am glad you could go and spend time there working. There sure has been a lot of rain - not to mention WEATHER! I hated to hear about the wind damage, but I am sure glad nobody was hurt! I love reading your blog, and I especially love seeing the photos of the kids. This weekend we have been celebrating Cis' birthday and our 45th anniversary. Davis and Katelyn spent the weekend with us, and Katelyn's friend Megan spent all day Saturday and Saturday night with us. Friday night, the four of us (K,D,C,&A)ate at Tino's. All the guys there were asking about you: How's the work, How do you plan to get back home, etc., etc. Davis and Katelyn tried some hot peppers. We had fun. Saturday, Davis helped me stack a half cord (~64 cu ft) of fireplace wood, and Katelyn and Megan cooked a fancy meal and birthday cake for Cis' birthday (Katelyn=Chef, Megan=Sous Chef) We had baby spinach salad with mandarin orange slices and raspberry vinaigrette dressing, tilapia (Product of Honduras) baked in herbs and white wine, snow peas, broccoli, fresh corn on the cob, rolls seasoned with herb butter, iced tea, muscadine juice, and an elegant strawberry birthday cake with vanilla frosting, decorated with red (frosting) roses and (real) bing cherries - all salt-free. Holly joined the five of us for the dinner. We ate everything in sight! Afterwards, D,K,M,C,&A went to see Prince Caspian. We enjoyed it, and the consensus was that this one was more action scenes and less plot than the first Narnia movie. Davis said that this one was not as close to the book as the first one. This morning Cis & I took all the houseguests to church, and now it is just Cis and me here at home. Love, Ank
